Impact Wrenches are main tools on job sites, automotive shops, and anywhere heavy equipment needs to be assembled or disassembled. We'll cover all the key aspects of pneumatic impact wrench maintenance. Follow these steps, and your impact wrench will provide years of reliable high-torque output.
Daily Visual Inspections
Before and after every use, you should do a quick visual once-over of your pneumatic impact wrench. Look for any signs of damage to the housing, such as cracks, dents, or excessive wear. Inspect the air inlet, making sure it's clear of debris. And check that the square drive shows no signs of rounding or other deformation, which could lead to slippage.
It's also a good idea to give the tool a firm shake and listen for any abnormal rattling noises from the interior components. While some noise is normal from the hammer mechanism, excessive rattling can indicate a part has come loose or is damaged.
With the visual check done, connect the air hose and run the tool briefly while holding the housing firmly. Watch for any housing vibrations that feel excessive, which could indicate internal damage.
Cleaning and Degreasing
Keeping your pneumatic impact wrench clean is critical for enabling proper lubrication and preventing premature wear. For a deeper cleaning, you'll need to disassemble the head casing and soak the internal components in a high-quality solvent degreaser. Be sure to use a degreaser specifically designed for pneumatic tool cleaning - household solvents can leave harmful residues. Allow the components to soak for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing off any accumulated sludge and grime.
Once fully degreased, thoroughly dry all components with compressed air before reassembling. Double-check that you've removed any remaining solvent residue, as this can prevent proper re-lubrication.
The Importance of Lubrication
Keeping your air impact wrench properly lubricated is arguably the single most important aspect of maintenance. These powerful tools generate tremendous force and friction inside their housing and mechanisms, without sufficient lubrication, they will rapidly deteriorate and eventually seize up completely.
Using a premium quality air tool lubricant designed specifically for pneumatic tools. These lubricants have the ideal viscosity and additive packages for maximum lubricity and prevention of carbon buildup, corrosion, and wear.
How much lubricant to use? For most impact wrenches, you'll want to lubricant the air inlet with 4-6 drops of oil before every period of prolonged use or once daily at minimum. When using your impact wrench for really heavy-duty tasks like heavy equipment repair, it's best to lubricate before and after every job.
Drive Accessories
The square drive anvils and sockets used with your impact wrench need their own inspection and maintenance routines. Closely examine sockets for any signs of cracks, rounding, or deformation before and after each use. Slightly rounded socket openings can be carefully dressed with a fine file to restore their fit.
However, if a socket shows any major spreading or thinning at the opening, it needs to be immediately taken out of service to prevent further damage or potential breaking while under high torque loads.
Be sure to use only impact-rated sockets and accessories designed to withstand the extreme forces generated during high-torque impacting. Chrome sockets have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, but if extreme duty is needed, opt for accessories made from heat-treated alloy steels.
