Factors To Consider When Using An Airless Spray Paint Machine

Airless spray paint machines are powerful tools that can streamline your project. But their effectiveness hinges on a understanding of the some factors that come into play. Getting these details dialed in can be the difference between just an okay job and truly stellar results.

Tip Wear & Replacement

The tip is the tiny hole at the end of the spray gun where the paint comes out under high pressure. It's subjected to tremendous wear from the abrasive paint particles and pressure cycle after cycle. Over time, this will cause the tip to wear and the hole to become larger. When this happens, you'll get an increasingly wider fan pattern that can create uneven coverage.

Tip wear can sneak up on you if you're not paying close attention. Always inspect the tip before use and check the fan pattern regularly during use. If it becomes noticeably wider or uneven, it's time for a new tip. Not changing a worn tip is one of the biggest mistakes I see that compromises finished quality.

Replacing the tip is easy and affordable. Simply unscrew the guard, pop out the old tip, drop in a new one matched to your machine, and replace the guard. It's a 60 second job that can save a lot of trouble.

Filtering Paint Materials Thoroughly

Another important factor is filtering your paint materials thoroughly before loading them into the sprayer. We're not just talking about giving them a basic strain—you need to filter, filter, filter. Airless pumps put an immense shearing force on the paint to build that high pressure. Any tiny particles of dried paint, dirt, or contamination can get caught in the sprayer's tiny passages and pack tight, causing clogs, excessive wear, or even total pump failure if left unchecked.

Filtering is cheap insurance against crazy expensive repair bills. We recommend a three-stage filtering process:

1) Use a coarse filter bag in your bucket to catch larger particles when pouring the paint in.

2) Use a mid-sized mesh filter when loading the material into the sprayer's inlet valve.

3) And finally, install a removal-mesh filter just before the spray gun to catch any ultra-fine particles.

Don't skimp on filtration—it is one of the easiest maintenance steps that will extend your pump's life tremendously. Replace those filters frequently too!

Take Ambient Conditions Into Account

One factor that is how ambient conditions like temperature, humidity, wind, and even barometric pressure can impact airless spraying. Even small changes in viscosity from fluctuating ambient factors can have a big impact.

In hot conditions, paint can thin out and the recommended tip size may be too large, leading to excessive overspray. Too cold and higher viscosity paints may not fully atomize. Humidity can cause blushing or blistering on some coatings. Wind can massively disrupt your spray pattern if you're outdoors. Barometric pressure changes can affect how well the pump builds pressure.

The best airless painters closely monitor the ambient conditions on the job site and make adjustments to their equipment, paint materials, and technique accordingly for the specific atmospheric factors each day. Using log sheets to track these details can really level up your consistency.

Pack Impacts

The pack or packing is a set of leather or rubber rings that the piston rod on a piston pump passes through. These create a mobile seal as the rod cycles. Over time, the abrasive paint will wear down the packings, allowing paint to leak out the rod opening.

This internal leak causes a loss of pressure at the gun, resulting in an inconsistent and poorly atomized fan pattern. You'll see this as a heavy area in the middle of the fan shape. The telltale signs are loss of pressure at the gun, leakage around the piston rod area, and that heavier middle pattern.
