Notable Operation Of The Gravity Feed Spray Gun

Gravity feed spray guns are necessary tools for any home workshop or auto body shop. We'll provide tips on how to get the most out of these versatile tools.

How Gravity Spray Guns Work

The key advantage of gravity feed guns is that the paint cup sits right on top of the gun. This allows paint to flow downward without any suction required. Inside the cup is a pickup tube that draws paint into the nozzle. The tube has a strainer on the end to filter out any clumps or debris. From there, paint flows through the inlet into the fluid passageways inside the gun body.

When you pull the trigger, air flows through the air cap. The paint mixes with the air stream and atomizes as it exits the nozzle. This is what creates the fine spray of paint droplets. Gravity keeps the passageways primed with fresh paint, allowing for continuous spraying without sputtering.

Loading the Cup

One of the first steps in using a gravity feed spray gun is properly loading the cup with your coating material. The cup size and shape can vary based on the model, but they are generally a metal or high-strength plastic reservoir that attaches to the top of the gun. When filling the cup, avoid overloading it with material. A good rule of thumb is to fill it no more than halfway to two-thirds full. Overfilling can cause thin, runny coverage as too much material tries to flow through the nozzle at once. The proper fill amount will allow just the right amount of coating to flow down into the nozzle via gravity.

Controlling the Fan Spray

A gravity gun gives you more control over the spray fan compared to siphon feed types. The high side of the air cap horns can be rotated to spray vertically or horizontally. Wide patterns are desirable for broad surfaces, while narrowing the fan allows more precision on contoured areas.

The distance between the air cap and the surface also determines fan width. Holding the gun closer to the surface results in a narrower spray pattern. Backing further away allows the fan to expand for wider coverage. Most painters hold the gun about 8-12 inches from the surface to achieve a 6-10 inch spray fan.

Avoiding Over-Atomization

Adjusting the air pressure on your compressor is key to avoiding a finish that appears dusty or gritty from over-atomization of the paint. High air pressure combined with low fluid delivery atomizes the paint too finely, creating a speckled pattern. For the best finish, use lower air pressure - around 10-25 PSI, and open the fluid adjustment knob further. The goal is even atomization without blowing the paint particles too far.

Cleaning Up Properly After Spraying

Thorough cleaning is a must for longevity and performance. First drain any remaining paint from the cup back into the can. Next rinse the cup with solvent until it sprays clear. Disassemble the gun and clean all parts including the nozzle, air cap, and fluid needle. Removing paint buildup ensures smooth operation and prevents clogs.

Reassemble the gun once all parts are dry. Before storing, add a few drops of lightweight oil through the nozzle and spray clear. This lubricates the internal passages so the gun is ready for its next use.

From furniture refinishing to auto body work, RONGPENG R830 LVLP gravity feed gun is a versatile tool every painter should have in their hand.

Unlike HVLP spray guns, the R830's LVLP operation greatly reduces bounce back and overspray. Materials are applied efficiently with less waste. finely atomize paint at lower air pressure. Achieve professional-level control over your finish.

Quick access to the needle, nozzle, and air cap makes maintenance and cleaning a breeze. Less downtime. Handle a wide range of coatings including primers, paints, stains, varnishes, enamels and more.
