Whether you're a professional painter or a DIY homeowner tackling a painting project, an airless paint sprayer can make the job go faster. Without proper set up, technique, and maintenance, you’re likely to encounter issues.
Know Your Equipment
To start, always read the instruction manual for your specific model of sprayer. While they operate on similar principles, there can be small but important differences between brands that impact setup, spraying technique and care. Airless sprayers have several key components, like the prime valve, filters, and spray tips that impact performance, knowing the functions of each piece will help you identify and address problems quickly.
Prepare Your Workspace Properly
You've likely heard it's important to cover floors, furniture, and surroundings when spray painting. But simply tossing down a drop cloth isn't enough. Take time to prep your workspace thoroughly, because improper precautions almost guarantee overspray problems.
Clear the area completely, move or tightly cover items rather than working around them. Use thicker plastic sheeting rated for painting instead of thin plastic that can tear. Securely tape down all coverings on all edges and seams to seal the floor and prevent leaks. And don't forget to mask window, doorways, and vents as overspray can easily travel and coat surrounding areas.
Prepare Your Paint Properly
Failing to properly prepare paint can totally sabotage your spray session. Try to spray at the ideal viscosity, too thick and paint won't atomize correctly, too thin and it will drip and splatter everywhere.
Be sure to pour your paint through a paint strainer before pouring it into the paint pot. This catches any dried paint flakes, lumps or other debris that could clog the sprayer tip. Check that paint is compatible with the sprayer model you’re using too, as some specialty coatings can clog valves, taking the time to correctly prepare paint prevents nozzle issues, uneven coverage, and subpar adhesion down the road.
Use the Proper Tip Size
Airless paint sprayer tips are sized according to “GPM” or gallons per minute. The optimum tip size depends on the consistency and composition of your paint and the specifics of your spraying project. Latex house paint flows easier than oil-based enamel for cabinets and doors. And spraying walls and ceilings requires more flow than detail work like furniture or trim. Use your paint sprayer tip sizes based on your project, using too small of a tip can lead to excessive pressure, clogging and uneven coverage.
Adjust the Pressure for the Job
Airless tips have an optimal PSI range for proper atomization. Adjusting the pressure lower reduces overspray and higher maximizes spray power. For interior walls and ceilings, a lower pressure around 1,800 PSI prevents fine misting. Exterior house painting requires more power, around 3,000 PSI for increased production speed. Turn the pressure down when spraying cabinets, trim, and doors to avoid excessive paint output.
Clean Thoroughly Immediately After Use
Be extremely careful to prevent tip clogs when laying off the gun or pausing between coats. Any dried spray material left in the tip quickly blocks flow, causing sputtering and poor spray patterns. There are a few ways to avoid this:
1) Don’t leave the sprayer unattended with pressure on, which allows paint to partially dry inside. 2) Cover the tip with a moist cloth or store it in water whenever laying off more than a few minutes. 3) Clean tips immediately if they become clogged. Use a toothpick or the cleaning tool supplied to gently clear any obstruction.
Paint debris left to dry inside any component can interfere with performance or permanently clog passages. Proper cleaning extends the sprayer’s life and prevents later issues. Most often, units need to be flushed with water, solvent or a cleaning solution based on the coatings sprayed.
