How To Stain A Deck With An Airless Sprayer?

date
2023/11/30

Staining your deck can protect and beautify the wood, helping it last for years. Airless sprayers also provide better penetration into the wood grain for long-lasting protection. When taking on a deck staining project with an airless sprayer, follow these key tips.

Choosing Your Materials

When prepping to stain your deck with an airless sprayer, choose your products carefully for best results. Opt for a specially formulated deck stain rather than a standard exterior stain. Deck stains contain UV blockers, water repellents, and mold/mildew inhibitors designed to protect exterior wood. For airless spray application, select a deck stain formulated to spray on without thinning. Oil-based or water-based stains will both work well, so choose the finish and color you prefer.

Use the Right Sprayer and Tip

For staining standard residential decks, a compact electric airless sprayer with around 0.5 gallons per minute (GPM) flow rate is ideal. Keep pressure at the lowest needed for good atomization, around 1200 PSI for thinning stains.

When selecting spray tip sizes, consider the thickness of your deck stain. Semi-transparent and solid color stains call for fine finish low pressure tips around .011”to .013”size, ability to spray efficiently at a lower pressure.

Preparing Your Deck

Use painters tape, cloth tarps or plastic sheeting secured with weights to cover any landscaping, patios, siding or windows near the project area. This will protect from accidental overspray getting where it’s not intended. Drop cloths underneath can catch drips and spills. Remove downspouts during staining if applicable.

Check for surface flaws like cracks, splinters and protruding nails. Sand rough areas, then vacuum up the dust. Fill small gaps with exterior-rated wood putty, allow to dry completely, then sand flush. Wipe the entire deck with a tack cloth before spraying on new stain.

Spraying On Your Finish

To avoid lap marks, always maintain a wet edge by applying stain on a smooth, continuous motion and working in rectangular sections. Plan your application path beforehand by partitioning off your deck into even work areas.

Move sprayer at a steady, straight rate parallel to the deck boards. Periodically pivot your torso rather than overextending your arms. Apply stain uniformly to saturation and back-brush spots showing lap marks, drips or thin coverage. However, avoid excess wetting.

Work during the shade and out of direct sunlight whenever possible, as this helps the stain dry properly. Do not spray in windy conditions that can disrupt the spray pattern and cause overspray issues.

Let Sections Dry Before Adding More

Allow each section ample drying time before adding another layer or reopening to traffic. Adding too much stain without drying in between can lead to a gummy, shiny finish and poor adhesion. Drying times range from 2-6 hours between coats in ideal weather conditions.

Once fully cured, the deck stain should appear evenly saturated without shiny spots for a professional look that highlights the beauty of the wood grain. Annually inspecting your deck and reapplying stain as needed will keep it looking its best.
