Airless spray tips come with multiple options of fan width, orifice size and atomizing application.
Choosing the right airless paint spray tip size is crucial for achieving a smooth, professional paint finish. The tip size controls the amount of paint being released and the size of the spray pattern. Here are airless paint spray gun tip size selection guide. Follow this guide to select the best airless paint spray tip size for your specific paint material.
Airless paint spray tips are sized using a 3 digit number such as 515. The first number has to do with the width of the spraying fan and the last 2 digits refer to the size of the hole or orifice the paint sprays through.
For instance a 508 and a 515 both have the same fan width (approx. 10″) but a different size hole. The 508 has a .008″ hole and the 515 has a .015″ hole. The 508 is used for thinner paints than the 515.
The size of the fan is calculated by doubling the number on the tip and that in inches is the size, eg a 415 is an 8 inch fan and a 517 is a 10 inch fan.
The second 2 numbers tell you how big the hole is and is a direct indication of what sort of paint will be able to be sprayed, eg a 211 has a small orifice meaning it will be suitable for thinner paints like waterbased enamels, where as a 517 is ideal for thicker paints like undercoats and roof paint.
Tip sizes typically range from .011 to .035 for household airless paint sprayers. An .015 tip is a medium size that works for most basic painting projects. Go smaller for fine finishes on trimwork and cabinets. Go larger for broad wall painting. When in doubt, start in the .013 to .017 range then adjust as needed.
The following tables display several paint applications with suggested corresponding paint spray tips. These spray tip sizes are merely recommendations and popular in the market. Here is a general guideline for airless paint sprayer tips as far as orifice sizes go as compared to the paint material to be sprayed.
A basic rule of thumb is to use small tip sizes (such as 0.009in, 0.011in, 0.013in) for thin / low viscosity materials such as stains & lacquers, medium tip size (such as 0.015″, 0.017″, 0.019″) for acrylic latex / enamel / emulsion / primer etc., then for heavier viscosity coatings use large orifice sizes (such as 0.021″, 0.023″, 0.025″, 0.027″ etc).
There will be some very heavy material such as putty, drywall mud, plaster, bitumen, fireproofing etc. you will need bigger airless spray gun tip nozzle over 0.031″. Correspondingly you need large airless paint sprayer equipment with more than 4L per minute volume.
These recommendations are based on typical 12″ distance from surface being sprayed with an 8-12″ fan size. Reversible airless spray tips for latex, paints spraying. 818C airless spray gun high quality airless paint spray gun with light weight and soft trigger.
