Precautions Of Painting Furniture Using Spray Gun

date
2023/10/05

For painting furniture, there are several methods to choose from, but one of the most efficient ways is by using an air spray gun. Compared to brush painting, air spray guns provide more control over paint flow, minimizes brush strokes, and speeds up the painting process. Following the guidance of RONGPENG, we'll provide you with all the information you need to know to get started with using them for furniture painting.

Not all spray guns are created equal when it comes to furniture painting. Look for an HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray gun designed for fine finishing work. HVLP spray guns atomize paint at lower air pressures, resulting in less overspray and material waste. The nozzle size should be around 1.0-1.4mm for optimal furniture paint atomization. Look for a spray gun with an adjustable fan control, Recommend RONGPENG R802 air spray gun, so you can widen or narrow the spray pattern.

Make all the preparations

Before you start painting, it's important to prepare the workspace.

Move the furniture to a well-ventilated area: Painting with an air spray gun can produce fumes and particles, so it's important to work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling these substances.

Cover the floor and surrounding surfaces: Use drop cloths or plastic sheets to cover the floor and any surrounding surfaces to protect them from overspray.

Mask the furniture: Use painter's tape and masking paper to cover any areas you don't want to paint, such as hardware or existing finishes.

Set up a spray booth: If you're working in a small area, consider setting up a spray booth to contain the paint particles and fumes.

Clean the furniture: Use a damp cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the surface of the furniture.  This will help the paint adhere better and prevent any imperfections in the finish.

Sand the surface: Use a fine-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of the furniture.  This will help roughen up the surface and create a better bond between the paint and the furniture.  Be sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid scratching the surface.

Fill any holes or cracks: If there are any holes or cracks in the furniture, use a wood filler to fill them in.  Allow the filler to dry completely before sanding it down to a smooth finish.

Remove any hardware: If the furniture has any hardware, such as knobs or handles, remove them before painting. This will help prevent paint from getting stuck in the hardware and create a smoother finish.

Prime the surface: If you're using a new color or painting over a dark color, it's a good idea to prime the surface first to ensure the paint adheres properly.

Tips for Painting Furniture

Refer to your RONGPENG spray gun manual for detailed setup instructions. Generally, you'll want to start with lower air pressure (25-35 PSI) and test the spray on cardboard. Adjust the pattern width using the fan control. Turn up the pressure if more atomization is needed but don't exceed 50 PSI. Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface at a distance of 8-12 inches for the best coverage.

For the most durable finish, start by applying a high-quality primer designed for furniture. Spray in even, overlapping strokes from side to side, moving fairly quickly. Apply 2-3 thin coats, allowing proper drying time between coats. Lightly sand the primer with fine grit sandpaper before applying paint.

The key to a smooth furniture paint finish is applying multiple thin coats rather than one thick, wet coat. Overlap your strokes by 50 percent for even coverage. Allow each coat to dry completely according to the paint's instructions before spraying again. 4-5 light coats usually provides excellent coverage and an even finish.
